Do directv or dishnetwork satellite dishes work for free to air (fta), legal reception?

I have a fta lnb from a friend, and i’m wondering if i can hook it up on a dish network or directv dish. I have heard that fta requires 30", but have seen otherwise. I have tried looking on satellite message boards, but franky their language is too technical. Please help! Can I simply change the lnb & have it work? 10 pts for thorough, clear answer. Thanks!

How can I get FTA channels from Mexico on the same dish for the Dish Network?

Which reciever should I get in order to use the same dish I now use with Dish Network??? Thanks!!

Can I still use FTA codes for Dish Network if it is shared within an apartment?

My apartment requires us to only have Dish Network because of some agreement they have. The apartment shares 1 satelite dish but we all have individual boxes. Can I still use the FTA codes through the box to unlock all the channels, or do I have to have my own dish?
